Pilates
Pilates is a form of exercise and conditioning created by Joseph Pilates in America in the early 1900's. His aim was to help dancers, gymnasts and boxers, amongst others, to excel in their fields, by strengthening abdominal and back muscles, and by increasing flexibility, thereby improving posture and reducing the risk of back problems or injuries.
The use of Pilates techniques was then extended to non sports professionals, in order to correct postural problems by stabilising the core muscles of the trunk. At the time, most of these problems were due to people standing at work for too long - seventy years on we need corrective action due to sitting all day! The A-B-C of Pilates is alignment, balance and coordination - an understanding of these in your one hour of Pilates can then instil an awareness of them for the remaining 23 hours per day.

Reflexology, Reiki, Meditation: additional information available on request.

Our Instructors

Debbie:
Debbie has been a teacher and course lecturer since 1996, and assessor and verifier of Pilates since 2002.
Debbie and her team of training course leaders possess experience and qualifications which are evident in their delivery.
Debbie was trained and mentored by Michael King, and more recently experienced the tutoring of Lolita san Miguel, one of the Joseph Pilates original “disciples”. As well as being course director at Hanson Pilates for Pilates Level 3 Instructor Training delivery, Debbie still maintains her own teaching and personal training schedule in Scotland. This encompasses not just Pilates, but Hatha Yoga, and children’s “Yoga Bees”; sessions of activity, imagination and yoga for tots to teens.
Debbie is also approved as a tutor of the Youth Sport Trust “Start to Play” and “Top Tots” training courses.

Tina has been practicing Hatha yoga for over 10 years and qualified with the Sivananda International School of Yoga in 2005. She is also a Reiki Practitioner, children’s yoga teacher and teacher of meditation. She believes in the wonderful benefits that yoga practice can bring, not only to the body but also the calming effects of the mind. Tina also believes this is brought about through the combination of asana and pranayama practices, combined with meditation practice to bring a sense of overall wellbeing. When your muscles are relaxed, your mind is relaxed but when your mind is anxious your body suffers too. Your yoga class will teach you physical, emotional and spiritual relaxation allowing you to let go of tension and stress.

Allison & Jean: teach Pilates based on both original and modified moves. This focuses on isolating and strengthening the deep postural muscles of the trunk, to improve posture and help reduce the risk of back injury.
Allison also works in a city centre office and appreciates the benefits of Pilates for those who spend much of their working day sitting down. She hopes to instil an awareness of Pilates principles which can be applied in everyday life.
Jean has attended Pilates classes for almost 10 years. Based on the benefits accrued on this attendance, she decided to embark upon Pilates teacher training. She now enjoys imparting these benefits to others.
For both teachers, Pilates is an effective antidote to a sedentary “other” career.
